Current Splash Features| | | AccessAll is now Connect Columbus | | | Habitat for Humanity Greater Columbus partnered with AT&T and One Economy last year to bring internet access to select homeowners in the AccessAll Initiative. These major successes are now being expanded in hopes of reaching many of HFHGC's other families. For background on the AccessAll Initiative, check out this article. | | | | Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design | | | ECOS has been working with Columbus Green Building to help with the design of the next area LEED project. Students have the opportunity to do research on various topics related to sustainable development, and will likely be assisting in the design of this LEED building. Some research has already gotten underway – check the forum for the latest. For more information, contact the VP of Local Projects at ecos.localprojects[at] gmail.com. | | | | Helping a Local Childcare Center Renovate for Efficiency | | | ECOS has been working with Eastminster Child’s Play and Learning Center in Bexley, Ohio, to help them renovate their building and increase energy efficiency, to ensure area families have a quality environment for their children to develop while they are at work. Team Battelle will be partnering with ECOS to help realize this goal. For more information, contact the VP of Local Projects at ecos.localprojects[at]gmail.com. | | | | Computational Fluid Dynamics Research | | | Alex Wohlgemuth has been working with a local mechanical engineer, Dale Andreatta, and his faculty advisor, Sandip Mazumder, to model developing world cook stoves in a series of computer programs called CFD-GEOM, ACE and VIEW. He has been able to use this program to determine the heat flux transferred to the bottom and sides of a pot given certain conditions, and plans to use it for other scenarios. | | | | Wheelchair Ramps | | | ECOS has recently finished constructing its third wheelchair ramp on March 1, 2008. Volunteers designed the ramp in CAD, plotted and dug holes, mixed and poured concrete for the posts as well as the landing pad, and built the ramp. Currently there are no other wheelchair ramp projects pending, but contact the VP of Local Projects at ecos.localprojects[at]gmail.com if you’re interested in helping out once we get another project set up. | | |
Previous Splash Features| | | The Latern Article | | | With the third wheel chair ramp entering its final stages, The Lantern did an article highlighting engineering organizations helping those in need. As a volunteer organization, ECOS was pleased they were chosen by The Latnern for this article. The article discusses not only our wheel chair ramp projects, but other projects that ECOS is currently working on, such as a trip to Montana de Luz. If you are interested in going on the trip, both of the forms will need to be turned in by November 13, 2007. | | | | OSU Splash Feature | | | Recently, Engineers for Community Service had a project featured on the OSU main webpage. The service trip to Montaña de Luz in Honduras that has been an annual ECOS trip was featured with a few highlights of the trip shown in this video: ECOS in Honduras Video. The page, as featured by The Ohio State University webpage can be seen by clicking the following: "ECOS at Montaña de Luz" | | | | Spirit of Ohio State Award 2007 | | | Engineers for Community Service has received the Spirit of Ohio State Award for the second time in three years. This award is given to student organizations and individuals who exemplify the spirit of Ohio State. Student members of ECOS learn valuable skills vital to professional development while reaching out to those in need. The development of the spirit of volunteerism among engineers is a valued quality at The Ohio State University and ECOS. | | | | Engineering in Honduras | | | Engineers for Community Service completed its 3rd annual trip to Montaña de Luz Orphanage in rural Honduras. Members of ECOS participated in project teams to test area drinking water, improve agricultural capabilities, repair and upgrade computers, create a rainwater collection system, and improve ventilation in the kitchen. These projects were a unique mix of new and continuing projects that allowed members of ECOS to practice and build upon their existing skills while helping a community in need. | | | | Sustainable Cook Stoves for Developing Nations | | Katie Kinstedt was involved the testing of an innovative fuel burning stove cooker for use in developing nations. She worked with a local Mechanical Engineer, Dale Andreatta, assisting in running fuel efficiency and operational experiments for the top lift up draft stove. Katie was involved in setting up the experiment, testing, as well as calculations and data documentation through drawing and graphs. "I found this experience rewarding and it has inspired me to pursue more ways of applying my engineering skills to community service."
